Split Batch vs. Transfer to a New Tank
One powerful feature at a time.
Split Batch vs. Transfer to a New Tank
The Problem
You have 40 hL of base beer and you want to send 10 hL of it somewhere else. BarSight gives you two ways to do that: Split Batch and a Transfer Volume into a New Tank. They both end with beer in a second tank, so it's easy to pick the wrong one.
The Solution
The question is whether the beer is still the same beer. If the portion is going to become a different product (a sour, a barrel-aged version, a fruited variant), split it. If it's the same beer that just needs a second tank, transfer it.
Split Batch: a new product
- Creates a new batch with its own batch number, product, and recipe.
- Takes the volume out of the tank you choose on the parent.
- Carries over a share of the parent's ingredient cost at the moment you split. After that, each batch tracks its own ingredients.
- The new batch has its own steps, ingredients, packaging, and history.
- Can be reversed with Undo Batch Split as long as nothing has been done on the new batch.
Transfer to a New Tank: the same beer
- Stays in the same batch. BarSight adds a "Transfer" step for the tank you pick.
- The batch keeps its product, recipe, and batch number.
- You package from either tank under the one batch.
How to Use It
- Open the batch and find the tank holding the beer.
- To make a new product, click Blend / Split on that tank and choose Split Batch. Pick a product and recipe, set the volume, and save.
- To keep the same beer, click Transfer on that tank instead. Enter the Volume, choose the New Tank pill, and select the tank.
- Click Transfer.

Pro Tip
Not sure yet? Transfer first. A transfer keeps everything in one batch, and you can still split the volume off into its own batch later from the tank's Blend / Split menu.
